Teacher’s Choice back; if you’ve begun making purchases, save receipts
Aug 9, 2007 5:21 PM
At the UFT’s urging, the Teacher’s Choice program has not only survived another round of budget cuts but actually got a funding increase by the City Council. As the New York Teacher went to press, the union and the Department of Education were negotiating how the $1.2 million of new funding would be used.
Last year general education teachers received $245 per year and special ed teachers received $215 per year.
The Teacher’s Choice program, now in its 21st year, is built on the premise that educators are in the best position to decide what supplies they need for their classrooms and assignments. The program remains an important supplement to meeting instructional supply needs.
If you’ve already begun making purchases, you may use receipts that date back to Aug. 1. The purchasing period ends on March 15, 2008.
Everyone eligible to participate in the Teacher’s Choice program will receive a personal check to cover purchases made anywhere — as long as the purchases are for appropriate educational materials for use in a classroom or other professional assignment.
That check — good for 90 days from the date of issuance — will be issued in December.
